Strong prices were alsorealised for: group of works representing differing visions of humanity, fromAntiquity and Africa, which were led by 19th century Luba female figure for abowstand, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which set the second highestprice at auction for an African work of art and the world record price atauction for Luba figure; During the early years of the last century, most of the leading artists oftheir generation lived and worked in Paris. They regularly exchanged ideasabout art, philosophy and humanity and how best to explore the human conditionin their paintings and sculptures. The greatest of them were heavily influencedby past visions of humanity as expressed in classical and primitive sculpturefrom distant parts of the world. In turn, these titans of 20th century artwould influence future generations of artists that followed them and continuedto focus on the human form in contemporary painting. They were inspired by theidealised human forms of the antique, which they called archaic, and thepersonification of the supernatural in the abstraction of African art.

Some, like Auguste Rodin and Aristide Maillol, and perhaps moresurprisingly Pablo Picasso, admired and were inspired by the certainty ofclassical antiquity – those cultures which produced extraordinary sculpture andfigural painting that flourished around the Mediterranean littoral in thedawning of the civilised world. Introduction Visions of humanity Africanand Ancient influences on 20th century ArtLot DescriptionA Luba Female Figure for Bowstand
