Very interesting piece... this is large counter table top writing desk that has metal side brackets with Metropolitan Life Insurance logo. This was the top of an agent's desk, it once had wrought iron legs with the same logo and chair. There are ink well openings and slot on the face of the front for mail.. very helpful ebay member whose father once worked for the company and owned one of these desks said that these were sold off to the employees in the 1950's when metal desks became all the rage... the lid of this desk has stable crack in the wood and there are various marks in the wood, some natural and some from use. There are some light etchings in the top writing area from bored employee! These are light and not immediately noticeable. feel that the removable upper shelf panel may be an early replacement as the grains look slightly different. LOADED with character, this large desk measures about 30" across, 23" wide and 16" tall to the top of the upper level. It is very sturdy and weighs about 40 pounds. It is missing one screw on the inside hinge, it has the outline of brackets and screw holes on the underside and modern screws on the underside that look to have been used to secure the bottom boards to the sides of the desk.
