[CHINESE ART, BOOK COVERS, PEKING GLASS, DECORATIVE ARTS]Offered here is an ORIGINAL CHINESE SILK BROCADE BOOK COVER WITH PEKING GLASS AND CARVED 'NATURAL MATERIAL' BEAD ADORNMENTS.
The cover measures 6.5 in 10.0 in (would fit book as large as that dimension) and despite some fraying of the spine portion of the cover, is in good and serviceable condition. The interior of the silk cover is in very good or better condition and still retains the original store label of 'Clayes San Francisco' inside.
We believe the 'Clayes' store this label refers to is the Clayes Drug Store which had locations in Modesto and Stockton. This cover likely dates from about 1915 or prior as it was found on book from 1900 and the book looks as though it was put on very near it's publication date.
An interesting and uncommon form especially with the Peking glass beads and the carved, openwork beads shown. As of this writing, we could find no other example similar.
