“The portions that are stained and finished are made of solid pine, and the backing is chestnut, which is a rare and valuable wood. It’s not commercially available due to the blight introduced between 1900 & 1908, which made the North American chestnut trees virtually extinct by 1940. The dresser has 2 glove or handkerchief compartments on top, and 4 drawers below. All of the drawers are equipped with their original, wooden knobs or pulls, and although they have keyholes, their locks have been removed. The drawers are held together with dowels (no glue and staples like modern drawers). There is a small dent in the molding of one of the glove compartments and one of the knobs is missing about a third of its structure (see last 2 photos). Otherwise, the chest is in great condition with only the typical nicks and scrapes that you would expect to find on a piece this old. The drawers slide in and out with ease, and the knobs are tight (no jiggling or play). The chest is strong and sturdy.”
